earns advanced degree in Curriculum and Instruction
Earning doctorate satisfies professional, personal
goals
John
Doughney, executive director of Curriculum and Instruction in GCISD,
has completed requirements for and earned his doctoral degree in
Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Texas.
Dr.
Doughney started the doctoral program in fall 2004. He is a strong
believer in the need to keep learning and growing professionally,
and obtaining a doctorate had been a personal goal of his for many
years. His experience has positively impacted him in all areas of
life.
“Professionally
it has exposed me to new ideas and perspectives,” he said.
“Personally it has reaffirmed my belief that intellectual
renewal is critical.”
A life-long
student at heart, the most enjoyable part of the doctoral process
for Dr. Doughney was the constant learning of different perspectives.
The
most challenging part of the process was balancing work, school
and family obligations. He admits it was difficult at times to stay
focused on the end result, as the process is quite demanding of
time and energy. However, he looks back now with a sense of accomplishment.
“This
has been the most challenging and rigorous endeavor I have experienced
in either my professional or personal life,” he said. “After
four years of persistence, I am very gratified to bring this process
to a successful conclusion.”
Dr.
Doughney has been in GCISD since January 2001, serving as director
of Assessment and Curriculum before being named executive director
of Curriculum and Instruction in July 2007.
