What's Happening this Week
Board meeting dates adjusted
A date has been added to the Board calendar and the regular board meeting date has been revised for May. Canvassing of votes will be conducted on Monday, May 19, at 2 p.m. in the Board Room at the GCISD Administration building. The administration of the oath of office and the election of Board officers will held be at the beginning of the regular monthly meeting which has been changed to Wednesday, May 28.

GHS Project Graduation planning underway
The next meeting of the Grapevine High School Project Graduation Committee will be May 20 at 7 p.m. in the Colleyville Elementary School Library. Future meetings are scheduled May 27 and June 3. Information: Kay Bradshaw: 817-656-1923.

Radio DJ to speak to CTMS students
Radio and TV personality Jody Dean will speak to our 6th grade classes at Cross Timbers Middle School on Thursday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m. in the SAC. Dean, who is the morning show DJ on 98.7 KLUV-FM will speak to the students about how he uses Geography skills every day in the working world.

Bear Creek Elementary Career Day
Students at Bear Creek Elementary K-5 will hear about various careers as part of Career Day on Friday, May 23rd. About 70 parents and community volunteers will speak to students throughout the day. Nana Puddin' Productions will also be on our campus that day with a program presented by
Joe Bruce regarding character education. Information: 817-305-4860.

GHS Senior Band to perform tonight
GHS Senior Concert Band will be Monday, May 19, 7 p.m. in the GHS Auditorium. The concert is free and will feature the GHS Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Honors Band and Wind Ensemble.

CHHS PTSA meeting set
The next meeting of the CHHS PTSA will be on Monday, May 19, 6 p.m. in the CHHS Lecture Hall and will include recognition of CHHS Scholarship recipients, winners of the Reflections Contest and other PTSA award winners.

Upcoming Events
CHHS Project Graduation highlights
CHHS seniors have until May 23 to sign up for the 2008 Project Graduation at Incredible Pizza and attend the event at no-cost. Contracts received after May 23 will be assessed a $50 fee to attend.  Contracts must be signed by the student and a parent and returned to the front office at CHHS or mailed to Project Graduation, P. O. Box 431, Colleyville, TX 76034.  Forms are available in the front office or on the CHHS Project Graduation website. Parent volunteers are needed to help with this event and parents who are interested may contact Judy Atwood at atwoodj@swbell.net to volunteer. In addition, commemorative bricks may be ordered until May 23 from the Project Graduation website.

Graduation ceremonies set for Class of 2008
Class of 2008 Graduation for Grapevine High School and Colleyville Heritage High School will be held on Saturday, June 7 at the Dallas Convention Center. GHS will be at 10 a.m. and CHHS will be at 2 p.m. Bridges Accelerated Learning Center Graduation Celebration will be Tuesday, May 27, 7 p.m., at the Colleyville Community Center.

District's childcare open to community this summer for preschool enrichment
The ECDC is open to the community this summer and will host enrichment camps for children 3-5 years old. Beginning June 7th and ending August 1st, the summer enrichment camps will focus on developmentally appropriate themes and be offered on a weekly basis from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.
Extended care will be available to parents for the remainder of the day. There will not be enrichment camps provided during the week of June 30 -July 4. Download a flyer with more details.

Driver's Ed and Target classes set for summer
Summer classes for Driver's Education and TARGET Evening Education program begin in June. Only one session, June 12-July 3, is scheduled for Driver's Education so students are encouraged to sign up early if they are interested in taking the course during the summer. Two sessions are planned for TARGET -June 9-20 and June 23-July 3. Additional information is available on the District's website at www.gcisd-k12.org. Free breakfast and lunch offered to students this summer
The Summer Food Service Program at Timberline Elementary provides free meals to all children age 18 and younger. These meals provide essential nutrients for active growing kids. To participate in the free meal program, all kids have to do is show up at a serving site. Breakfast is offered from 8:15 a.m. – 9 a.m. and lunch is offered 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. The entire meal must be consumed at the serving site; absolutely no “to go” breakfasts or lunches are available.

Awards and Announcements

Banquet honors Special Olympians and volunteers
The 2008 Special Olympics Awards and Recognition Banquet, hosted for 25 years by the Grapevine Rotary Club, was held May 7 at the Grapevine Convention Center. Each of the 87 GCISD Special Olympics athletes were recognized and presented with a personalized letter from Congress Kenny Marchant. Awards were presented to the following individuals:

  • Volunteer of the Year - Jim Diemicke
  • District Volunteer of the Year - Sally Itz
  • Student Volunteer - Nathan Weller, CMS
  • Family of the Year - Doug and Kristy Weller
  • Male Athlete of the Year - Marcus Anderson, Transition
  • Female Athlete of the Year - Brittaney Hilt, CHHS

Special recognition was given to Stacy Bray and Jessica Fehmel for their help with the basketball program. Art projects completed by these Special Olympians were also available for viewing, a district-wide effort sponsored by Toni Byam, CHHS Art teacher. The banquet was attended by more than 350 students, faculty, staff, administrators, Rotary members, and parents. Special thanks were given to sponsors, including: Grapevine Rotary Club, Colleyville Woman’s Club, Baylor Medical Center at Grapevine, National Charity League, Krispy Kreme, Chick-fil-A Grapevine, Chick-fil-A Southlake, GCISD Facility Services, Target of Grapevine, and Valley View Productions.

CHHS senior selected to academic excellence team
Khurram Ali, a senior at CHHS has been selected by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals (TASSP) as a member of the TASSP All-State Academic Excellence Team. This award recognizes 20 Texas high school seniors for their outstanding achievements and the rewards of superior scholarship. As a member of the TASSP All-State Academic Excellence Team, Khurram Ali will be awarded a $500 scholarship and formally recognized at the TASSP Summer Workshop in Austin on June 12. Students are nominated by their principals based on SAT or ACT scores, academic grade point average, pursuit of advanced diploma, and other evidence of exceptional academic ability. Each student nominated was asked to write a 300-500 word essay to submit with the application. From this group of 200+ outstanding young scholars, twenty were chosen for the TASSP All State Academic Excellence Team.

Middle school dance teams selected
Cross Timbers Middle School, Colleyville Middle School and Grapevine Middle School dance teams for the 2008-09 school year have been selected. Members of the CTMS Alpha Diamond Dance Team, CMS STARS Dance Team and the GMS Pony Pride Dance Team are listed on the District's website.

Transportation Services seeks feedback from parents
Parents are asked to participate in Transportation Services annual survey to provide feedback on their student's bus riding experiences. Information from the survey will be used in planning for next year. The survey will be available on the District's website until May 30. Take the survey now.
