Texas Rangers donate scholarship
funds in memory of Chris Gavora
Thanks
to a generous donation from the Texas Rangers Baseball Club, 10
Grapevine High School graduating seniors will receive scholarships
in memory of their classmate Chris Gavora.
“The
Texas Rangers Baseball Club believes strongly baseball is more than
just a game!” said Norm Lyons, vice president, external affairs.
“We aspire to be a good corporate citizen and neighbor by
assisting in the preservation of Christopher’s memory through
the offering of 10 scholarships in his name this year to Grapevine
High School students.”
The
$10,000 donation will fund 10 $1,000 scholarships for GHS students,
who will be recognized during GCISD night on May 22 at Ameriquest
Field in Arlington. In addition, the Mustang baseball team will
be honored that night and the GHS choir will perform the National
Anthem.
The
Rangers will present the check to GHS administrators and members
of the Gavora family on March 14 prior to the Grapevine Mustang
baseball game against Waxahachie at Ameriquest Field. Retired Rangers
outfielder Rusty Greer will present the check.
“This
is yet another example of the extraordinary outpouring of support
that our school has received from our community and across the country,”
said GHS Principal Dr. Jerry Hollingsworth. “While we continue
to mourn Chris, we are so touched by the response from so many wonderful
people.”
School
officials are working with the Gavora family to determine criteria
for the scholarships, and they will also work together to determine
the recipients. This is a one-time donation from the Rangers.
Two
additional scholarships have been established in memory of Gavora.
