What’s Happening This Week
GCISD celebrates National School Bus Safety Week
GCISD students, parents and staff members are encouraged to take a moment and thank their bus drivers as part of National School Bus Safety Week on Oct. 15-21. In addition, motorists are reminded to exercise constant courtesy and caution when near school buses. An estimated 4,000 GCISD students ride school buses each school day.
Registration begins for next TARGET session
Registration begins Oct. 16 for session 2 of GCISD’s TARGET evening classes for high school credit. Basic courses are offered to allow students to catch up on credits, advance in order to graduate early or open a section of their normal schedule to take another course of their choice. The session runs from Oct. 30-Dec. 14 and classes are held at Bridges Accelerated Learning Center, 736 E. Northwest Highway in Grapevine.
Registration forms and payment will be accepted from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. through Oct. 26 at the Office of Continuing Education at 736 E. Northwest Highway in Grapevine. Late registration is 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 27. Cost for the one-semester class is $200 for GCISD students and $250 for students from other districts. A $10 non-refundable registration fee will be charged per student. Checks, money orders and cash are accepted in person; MasterCard, Visa and Discover are accepted by fax at 817-251-5477. TES Fit Feet Club resumes
The Timberline Elementary Fit Feet Club kicks off the new school year on Oct. 17 for second- and third-grade students and Oct. 18 for fourth- and fifth-grade students. This program is a school-sponsored, after-school fitness club where students walk for 30 minutes one day each week. Students earn certificates for distance milestones achieved throughout the year and receive special recognition at year-end ceremonies. The program, coordinated by the TES physical education teachers, started 17 years ago at TES and promotes exercise, health and fitness in a fun social environment. Fall band and choir concerts
Grapevine Middle – The Acappella Choir will perform at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Grapevine High.
Grapevine Middle – Fall voice recital, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the GMS Lecture Hall.
Colleyville Heritage – Panther Choirs will present the annual Fall Concert, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the CHHS Auditorium. Spaghetti dinner fund-raiser will be 5:30-7 p.m. Cost is $4 for children younger than 10, $6 for ages 10 and older, $20 for family of four or more. Contact any CHHS choir member or director for tickets.
GCISD College Night
GCISD will host College Night for students and parents from Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine high schools from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 17 in the GHS Student Activities Center. Financial aid workshops are scheduled for 6:40 p.m., 7:20 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the Lecture Hall. An estimated 120 representatives from colleges around the nation will be on hand to discuss their campuses and answer questions. For more information, see your high school counselor.
CHHS Choir hosts fund-raiser at Cotton Patch
The Colleyville Heritage High School Choir will host a fund-raiser on Oct. 19 at Cotton Patch restaurant in Grapevine. Patrons simply present a flyer to their server and Cotton Patch will donate 10 percent of each purchase to the CHHS Choir. See any CHHS Choir member for a flyer. Muffins for Moms at HES
The Heritage Elementary Dad’s Club will host “Muffins for Moms” from 7:30-8 a.m. Oct. 20 in the cafeteria. Students, parents and staff members are invited to enjoy a muffin before school begins. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the HES James F. Curtin Endowment. Staff members also will be wearing pink to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. CES students celebrate ‘Pig Picnic’
Kindergarten students at Colleyville Elementary will attend the annual Pig Picnic at 10:30 a.m. on Oct. 20. Students will wear hand-made pig hats and enjoy food that begins with the letter “P.” Information: 817-305-4940.

Students and employees throughout GCISD will join schools across the nation on Oct. 23-27 in celebrating Red Ribbon Week. A variety of activities are planned at GCISD campuses; check individual campuses for a schedule of events.
GHS celebrates 100 years
Grapevine High School is celebrating its 100-year anniversary with a variety of activities throughout the week of Oct. 23-27 leading up to the Homecoming game on Oct. 27. See the link to upcoming events on http://www.gcisd-ghs.org/ for a list of activities.
Education Foundation, Trustees honor National Merit Semifinalists
The Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation will host a reception honoring the district’s 14 National Merit Semifinalists from 6-7 p.m. Oct. 23 in the lobby of the GCISD Administration Building. Following the reception, the semifinalists will also be recognized by the Board of Trustees during the October meeting. Information: 817-251-5480.
TES Dad’s Club hosts Halloween skate party
The Timberline Elementary Dad’s Club will host its annual Halloween skate party from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at Skatetown in Grapevine. Fall band and choir concerts

Colleyville Heritage – The Panther Chorale will join varsity mixed choirs from Flower Mound and Hebron high schools in a joint concert beginning at 4 p.m. Oct. 28 at Flower Mound High School. The choirs will perform a special Mozart Requiem under the direction of Dr. Jonathan Reed from Michigan State University with members of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra accompanying. Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door and can be purchased from any CHHS choir member or director.
GCISD student holiday/staff development
GCISD campuses will be closed Oct. 30 for a student holiday. GCISD employees will participate in professional development activities. Classes will resume Oct. 31 as scheduled.
Awards and Announcements
GMS students awarded with computers
Fourteen Grapevine Middle School students received a complete computer system from the Grapevine Rotary Club for their winning essays about the importance of having a computer. The students were honored at the Oct. 11 meeting and luncheon at the school. This program is in its third year at GMS. Rotarians now will deliver and set up the computer systems in the winning students’ homes.
GCISD administrator receives state Science award
John Doughney, GCISD director of Curriculum and Instruction, has received the 2006 Distinguished Leadership in Science Award from the Science Teachers Association of Texas. Doughney has been invited to the Conference for the Advancement of Science in Texas in November in Wichita Falls to receive this prestigious award.
Heritage Elementary makes state honor roll
Heritage Elementary is one of a select group of 178 elementary schools in Texas to be named to the Texas Business & Education Coalition’s Honor Roll for 2006. This is the most prestigious award in the state for campuses with sustained academic excellence in all subject areas over a three-year period. HES will be recognized along with other Honor Roll schools at an awards reception Dec. 4 in Austin.
CMS collecting clothing for commemorative quilt
Colleyville Middle School staff members are collecting CMS shirts, T-shirts, sweatshirts and jerseys that will be used to make a large quilt commemorating the school’s 30th anniversary this year. Once completed, the quilt will hang in the school’s foyer. Please provide laundered items without fabric softener by Nov. 15. GHS alumni sought
Organizers of Grapevine High School’s 100-year anniversary are seeking yearbooks and/or graduation programs from that school’s history. These are being used to compile of complete listing of GHS graduates on the school’s website, www.gcisd-ghs.org.
