Student
performance, participation exceed federal standards
Heritage Elementary passes last hurdle
to achieve NCLB-Blue Ribbon status
Grapevine-Colleyville
ISD students exceeded standards in all components outlined in the
Adequate Yearly Progress Report released Wednesday by the Texas
Education Agency. As a result, all GCISD campuses and the district
have met AYP requirements for 2006.
In addition,
this was the final requirement for Heritage Elementary to be classified
as a No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School for 2006. Heritage
Elementary was chosen by the state in November as one of 26 of 8,000
Texas schools to be considered for this award. The Blue Ribbon Schools
program was revamped in 2002 as part of the federal No Child Left
Behind initiative. School officials will attend an awards ceremony
later this fall.
“This
is such a high honor for Heritage Elementary and is a reflection
of the hard work, dedication and commitment of its students, parents
and staff members who continually strive to raise the bar of excellence,”
said Superintendent Dr. Kay Waggoner. “As for the AYP results,
all GCISD students and campus communities should be very proud of
meeting the federal standards for accountability.”
AYP is a measure
of student performance and participation included in the federal
No Child Left Behind Act. Under these provisions, all public school
campuses, school districts and the state are evaluated and required
to meet criteria on three measures: reading/language arts, mathematics
and either graduation rate for high schools and districts or attendance
rate for elementary and middle schools.
Student performance
and participation in both the math and reading portions of state
tests are evaluated for all students as a group and separately for
students in six categories – African American, Hispanic, White,
Economically Disadvantaged, Special Education and Limited English
Proficient.
For
2006, GCISD as a whole and each campus meeting the minimum size
criteria exceeded all standards overall and in each of the six student
categories for both performance and participation.
