A student is required to attend the school designated for the attendance area in which the student resides. However, under certain circumstances, a sibling student may be permitted to transfer to a school outside of his or her attendance zone to attend the campus where a sibling is currently attending.

A resident parent or resident legal guardian of a student sibling may request a transfer from one campus to another. The criteria used in considering a resident transfer application are found in Administrative Regulations, S – Student Lottery Transfer Process and are as follows:

  • Siblings of students who have already been placed at a campus through a transfer request or lottery will not go through the lottery process to be placed at the same campus. Parents shall complete a request for transfer and the district will place these students (siblings) after district employee’s children have been placed in their requested campus. All sibling transfers are based on the capacity of the desired campus, as defined in Board Policy.

Upon approval, the student is allowed one campus transfer per school year; however, at the end of the semester, a student may transfer back to the campus in the student’s attendance zone. Approved transfers remain in effect until the student completes the grade levels offered at the school unless the transfer is revoked as per Board Policy FDB(LOCAL).

For the purpose of determining the assignment of transfer students, space shall be considered available when a campus has enrolled less than 90 percent of its enrollment projection for the coming school year. An approved transfer for one child does not guarantee space availability for current or future siblings.

A. Procedures for requesting a transfer

A student applying for a program lottery is not required to submit a transfer request

  1. All transfer requests received during the designated dates will be processed in the order in which they are received. The transfer committee will review requests and decisions will be issued by email notification. Sibling Resident transfer request will be accepted during the following dates: March 26 at 4:00 pm until 4:30 pm on April 20, 2018
  2. Email notifications of placement will be send out as students are placed.  Please keep in mind that some notifications may not be sent out until the week before the school year starts.
  3. Kindergarten transfer notifications will be sent in August, and may be prior to the first day of school, August 20, 2018
  4. Based on FDB(LOCAL), the district transfer committee will approve or deny the request for the transfer.
  5. Requests may be submitted and approved outside the timeline when circumstances exist that might significantly and negatively impact the student. Such requests should be initiated by contacting the principal at the student's zoned (home) campus.

B. Transportation

Parents will provide transportation to and from school in transfer situations. Any right to free transportation offered by the district is waived.

C. Revocation of transfer

A resident transfer student who fails to abide by the rules and policies as contained in the GCISD Student-Parent Handbook exhibits poor academic performance, has repeated incidences of tardies, or exhibits poor attendance may have his or her transfer revoked by the campus principal.

D. UIL Eligibility

  • Any student who transfers to a school outside of the student's attendance zone of residence will be subject to all eligibility rules of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) and such eligibility rules as may be adopted by the Board of Trustees.
  • It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to contact the GCISD Executive Director of Athletics for more information.
